BLYTHE, Harry Robert

No. 240653, Private, Harry Robert BLYTHE
Aged 21

5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on Thursday, 19th April 1917

Harry Robert Blythe was born in Landwade (Newmarket Q2-1896 3B:532), son of Henry and Frances Laura BLYTHE (née TURNER).

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Mill Cottage, Landwade with his father Harry BLYTHE [36] farm labourer born Fordham; his mother Laura [27] born Fordham, sisters Emma [9] born Fordham, Jessie [8] born Landwade and Naomi [7] born Fordham and brother John [3] born Landwade.

1911 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was at Station Road, Fordham with his parents, sister Naomi Susannah and brother John Alfred (farm labourer).

Since Harry is not on the Fordham or Exning memorials it must be assumed the family moved to Burwell some time after 1911. Certainly his mother was at Toyse Lane,Burwell on the pension card

He enlisted in Newmarket.
The 5th Suffolks had 6 men killed in the 2nd battle of Gaza (17-19 April 1917), 5 are buried in Gaza, only Harry has no known grave. In the three weeks between the 1st and 2nd battles of Gaza the Turks had strongly reinforced their defences so the Suffolk seemed to have escaped lightly with 86 casualties, only 6 killed.
